Birth Photography

First off, let me say that I love love love (did I say love?) shooting weddings and engagements. The love two people have makes my job so much easier. Capturing that love in an honest and authentic manner continues to be my goal.

That being said, I have dived headfirst into the world of birth photography. After I had my own little one 21 months ago, I turned towards newborn photography quite a bit. I love it. I love those itty bitties so much! Then I thought, wouldn’t it be fabulous to photograph the actual birth? This is something nobody is concentrating on…all eyes are on the mom to be. What if I were like a fly on the wall getting all those beautiful moments that nobody is noticing? Those tiny seconds that are looked back upon with tears of joy.  Then I realized this is a thing. That there are photographers out there that specialize in this too. Hmmm…  I thought I was being original. Darn, but I can be different in the way I tell the story. In my own way with my own vision.

Below are some images of my latest birth photography story. The actual link to the slideshow (which is far more comprehensive than the stills I have here and oh so beautiful!) is here: Tait’s Birth Story.  This was an amazing woman. And the father was amazing too. The two moms were there and they were amazing as well. Why do I say amazing so much? Because the love that was in that room was extraordinary and to have allowed me in to glimpse a moment such as this was amazing times three!

I look forward to do many many more. I look forward to being THE San Luis Obispo Birth Photographer and the Paso Robles Birth Photographer. Oh heck, lets throw in The Arroyo Grande Birth Photographer too!

Before you ask, yes! I still do weddings!!!

Great photos! What was it like being in the room while the birth was taking place? What did the other people think about your being there? What about the doctor and nurses? Did they have any issue with you being in the room?

Hi Tom, great questions! My first response is that it was so awesome. I mean awesome in the most literal sense: an overwhelming sense of admiration and awe inspiring. I was a little nervous as when the pain started I didn’t want to feel intrusive, yet I wanted the moment caught on film.

The mom to be, her mom and partner and her boyfriend were all in the room and I feared it would be too many and I would be asked to leave. However; the doctors and nurses at Kaiser San Leandro welcomed me without issue. I do stay out of everyone’s way and didn’t make a nuisance of myself which helped I am sure!

This was definitely something I look forward to doing much more of. I have another “scheduled” for early June…but babies being delivered and schedules should never be used in the same sentence. 🙂

Wow, that sounds like a truly special and unique experience. Be sure to let us know how the one in June goes!
